The rules we hold ourselves to, including the ones that cost us money.
How we choose what to recommend
We are a small publisher, not a testing lab. We don’t buy, assemble or sleep in the beds we write about, and we won’t pretend otherwise.
What we do instead is read the specifications — carefully, and against the rules that actually govern children’s beds in the United States. For every bed we cover we record the guardrail height above the mattress, the stated weight limit per bunk, the manufacturer’s minimum age and the mattress-thickness ceiling those two numbers imply. We check them against the federal standard for children’s bunk beds (16 CFR Part 1513), the ASTM F1427 requirements it incorporates, and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ guidance on upper-bunk age. Where a manufacturer doesn’t publish a number, we say so rather than guess — that absence is itself worth knowing.
We read owner feedback at volume for the things specs can’t tell you: whether a frame wobbles after a year, whether the ladder hurts bare feet, whether the hardware strips on assembly. We treat that as signal, not proof, and we label it that way.
We earn a commission when you buy through our links. It never changes an ordering. If the cheaper bed is the safer bed, that is the one at the top.
What we will never claim
- That we tested anything. Not “expert-tested”, not “lab-tested”, not “parent-tested”, not “in our testing”. We did not.
- Any professional credential. No certification, no medical review, no expert panel. Janet H. holds none of these and we will not invent one.
- A price, rating or review count we cannot source. No prices are published on this site; every buy link goes to the live listing.
- A deal, discount or price prediction. In any season. We have no way to verify one and a wrong one costs you money.
- A customer testimonial. There is no testimonials section on this site, because we have no real reviews to put in one.
How products get onto the site
A product is added when it is a real, currently-sold model that fits a genuine gap in what we cover, and when we can find enough published specification to fill in a spec block honestly — including by writing “not published by the manufacturer” where that is the truth.
We do not accept payment for inclusion, for a position in a ranking, or for a favorable description. No brand has reviewed a page on this site before publication and none will.
How products come off
Recalls are absolute. A recalled product comes off the site the same day we learn of it, and the page says it was removed and why. We sweep the CPSC recalls database monthly for every brand we feature. On a child-safety site this is the single most important maintenance task we do.
Products also come off when they are discontinued, when a manufacturer’s published specs change in a way that makes our recommendation wrong, or when we simply conclude we got it wrong.
How often we update
- Safety and standards pages — quarterly, and immediately on any change to 16 CFR 1513, ASTM F1427 or AAP guidance.
- Roundups — quarterly, and immediately if a pick is discontinued or recalled.
- Comparisons — every six months.
- Sizing and spec guides — every six months.
- Recall sweep — monthly.
The “last updated” date on a page reflects a real edit. We do not re-stamp pages on every deploy, because a date that always says today is a date nobody can use.

Every safety claim on this site carries an inline link to a primary source. In practice that means the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 16 CFR Parts 1513 and 1213, ASTM F1427, and the American Academy of Pediatrics via HealthyChildren.org.
We attribute precisely. The CPSC sets the construction rules — guardrail count, the five-inch clearance, the continuous wall-side rail — and its bunk bed guidance contains no age recommendation at all. The under-six top-bunk guidance is the AAP’s. Plenty of sites blur the two; we do not, and you can check us on it at bunk bed safety standards.
We do not cite other affiliate sites, AI-generated summaries or unsourced retailer blogs.

Corrections

We check reported errors against the manufacturer’s own listing or documentation. Where a correction changes a recommendation, we change the recommendation and update the page’s modified date. Where it changes a safety claim, we fix it immediately.

We write about furniture and bedding. We are not medical or sleep professionals, and nothing on this site is medical advice. Questions about a child’s sleep, development or health belong with your pediatrician. Where we cite the AAP, we are citing them — not speaking for them.
