Loft beds for kids

A loft bed is a bunk bed with the bottom bunk removed. That is not a joke — it is the most useful way to think about it, because every safety rule that governs the upper bunk of a bunk bed governs the deck of a loft bed in exactly the same way. The same five-inch guardrail clearance applies. The same mattress-thickness arithmetic applies. The same age guidance applies, and arguably more strictly, because a loft deck is often higher than a bunk’s.

What you gain is the floor. A twin loft frees up roughly nineteen square feet of usable room, and in a small bedroom that is the difference between a bed and a bedroom. What you spend is ceiling height, and this is where most people get caught out.

The arithmetic nobody does before ordering. Take your ceiling height. Subtract the deck height of the bed. Subtract the mattress thickness. What is left is the space your child sits up in, and you want somewhere between thirty and thirty-three inches of it for a child to sit upright without ducking. A standard eight-foot ceiling with a high loft often leaves less than that, and the result is a child who bangs their head every morning for six years. How the category divides. Low lofts put the deck around 40 to 48 inches up: safe for younger children, easy to reach, and the space below suits a play tent, a reading nook or storage — but usually not a desk and chair. Full or high lofts put the deck at 60 inches or more and genuinely fit a workstation underneath, at the cost of needing a taller ceiling and an older child. Between them sits the pull-out desk, which solves the clearance problem by only being a desk when someone is using it.

What decides price. The same frame-material ladder as bunk beds, plus whatever is built into the underside. A plain metal low loft is the cheapest bed in this whole site’s registry. A solid-pine full loft with an integrated desk and bookcase can cost five times as much, and that is genuinely three pieces of furniture in one footprint rather than a markup. Built-in storage sits in between, and built-in desks are the single biggest line item because they require the frame to be deeper and stiffer.

The mistake buyers make is assuming any loft fits a desk. Most low lofts do not, and the listing photo — shot with a child-sized table and a wide-angle lens — will suggest otherwise. Measure the desk you actually own, add the chair back height, and compare that against the published under-deck clearance before ordering.
