The AAP advises no child under six on the top bunk, because a child under six lacks the coordination to climb safely or to stay put while asleep. That is medical guidance, not law — the CPSC’s bunk bed rules contain no age recommendation at all. See top-bunk age readiness.

Guardrail height above the deck, minus five inches — or whatever lower ceiling the manufacturer publishes. Six to eight inches is typical, and a topper counts toward the same total. The arithmetic is on mattress thickness and guardrails.

Yes — at least two upper-bunk guardrails with at least one on each side, and the wall-side rail must run continuously end to end. A bed with one rail and a gap for the ladder does not meet the standard.

Loose fasteners first, an uneven floor second, missing hardware third. Genuine design faults are rare. See assembly and stability.
