Kids desks and storage

This is the part of a child’s room that arrives last and gets the least thought, and it is where the two most common furniture mistakes in a bedroom happen: a desk sized for an adult, and a tall storage unit that was never anchored to the wall.

The desk-height rule, in one line. A child should sit with their feet flat, knees at roughly ninety degrees, and forearms resting level on the desk surface. Standard adult desk height is about 29 to 30 inches, and a great many “kids” desks — including the pull-out desk built into some loft beds — are closer to 34 inches, which is counter height. A seven-year-old at a 34-inch desk is working with their shoulders around their ears. The fix is either an adjustable desk or, much more cheaply, a chair that raises them to the right height plus a footrest so their legs are supported. The height guide has the numbers by age.

The storage rule, in one line. Children put things away when putting them away is easier than not. That means low, open and few — a bin a four-year-old can carry to the mess beats a beautiful cabinet they have to open. Front-facing bookshelves work for pre-readers because a child picks a book by its cover, and stop being worth the space they take once a child reads by spine.

What decides price. In desks, adjustability. A fixed wooden desk at the right height for a seven-year-old costs very little and is outgrown by eleven; an electric sit-stand desk costs several times as much and covers the entire span from primary school to sixteen, which makes the maths closer than it looks. In storage, frame material and whether the bins are woven cotton or non-woven polypropylene — the non-woven ones are genuinely disposable and sag within a couple of years, so cotton canvas at double the price is the cheaper option over any real period.

The mistake buyers make — and this one matters. Tall furniture in a child’s room gets anchored to the wall, every time, no exceptions. Furniture tip-over is one of the genuinely serious hazards in a bedroom, and the anti-tip kit in the box is not a suggestion. If a unit ships without one, buy a strap separately before you put anything on the shelves. This applies to bookcases, to dressers, and to any desk with a hutch above it.
