The best kids dressers

Furniture tip-over is the hazard that makes a dresser different from a shelf. There is a federal rule for it now, and the quickest way to sort this category is to ask which listings mention it.

#ad — how we earn

How we chose

We are a small publisher, not a testing lab. We don’t buy, assemble or sleep in the beds we write about, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What we do instead is read the published specifications and check them against the rules that actually govern children’s beds in the United States: the federal standard for children’s bunk beds (16 CFR Part 1513), the ASTM F1427 requirements it incorporates, and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ guidance on upper-bunk age. Where a manufacturer publishes no number, we write “not published by the manufacturer” rather than guess — that absence is itself worth knowing. We read owner feedback at volume for the things specs can’t tell you, and we label it as signal, not proof.

We earn a commission when you buy through our links. It never changes an ordering. Our full editorial policy.

The short answer

Buy the Delta Children Universal 6 Drawer Dresser with Interlocking Drawers. It states on the listing that it is tested to meet the current requirements of ASTM F2057 - the mandatory tip-over standard - its interlocking drawers stop a child opening several at once, it is GREENGUARD Gold certified, and the tip-over restraint is in the box rather than sold separately.

If you need deeper drawers for folded sweatshirts and bedding, the Delta Children Perry is the same standard and the same interlocks with a full extra inch of interior drawer height.

On a tight budget, the Gizoon 4 Drawer Dresser is narrow, cheap and the only pick here that publishes what its drawers will hold - but it never names a stability standard, and you should know that before you buy it.

Why a dresser is not just another storage box

A bookcase holds things. A dresser offers a child a ladder. Pull out the bottom drawer, stand on it, pull out the next one, reach for something on top - and the center of gravity of the whole unit moves out past its front feet. That is the tip-over mechanism, and it is the reason clothing storage units are regulated differently from the rest of the furniture in a child’s room.

The CPSC’s clothing storage unit guidance sets out the rule. It is codified at 16 CFR part 1261, it incorporates the ASTM F2057 standard, and it applies to units manufactured after September 1, 2023. A unit is in scope if it is free-standing and meets all three of: a height of at least 27 inches, a mass of at least 30 pounds, and an enclosed storage volume of at least 3.2 cubic feet. The guidance notes that fabric dressers with drawers can qualify under those criteria too.

The three stability tests are worth knowing because they explain what the good dressers are doing. A clothing load test fills the enclosed storage at 8.5 pounds per cubic foot and holds it for 30 seconds. A horizontal force test applies 10 pounds of force at the highest hand-hold, no higher than 56 inches, for 10 seconds. And a carpet-and-child-weight test hangs a 60-pound apparatus on the front of the drawer or door most likely to cause a tip-over, for 30 seconds. Where a unit has drawer interlocks, those must hold 30 pounds of force for 5 seconds.

On top of the tests, the rule requires that an anti-tip device meeting ASTM F3096 is packaged with the product, and that warning labels carry specified statements and pictograms.

What the rule does not do

It does not anchor the dresser to your wall. Every stability figure above is a laboratory result on an unanchored unit, and the carpet-and-child-weight test exists precisely because so many dressers are never fixed to anything. The anchor in the box is the cheapest safety improvement available in a child’s room and the most commonly skipped - our furniture anchoring guide covers how to do it on drywall, plaster and a rented wall.

How we ranked these

Does the listing name ASTM F2057? This is the first filter and it is brutally effective. Three of the five picks here state that they are tested to meet the current requirements of ASTM F2057, naming the standard by number. Two say nothing about any stability standard at all, and one of those two is in scope of the federal rule by its own published height and weight.

Interlocking drawers. A mechanism that limits how many drawers open at once directly attacks the tip-over mechanism, and it is the feature the standard’s interlock test is written for. The three Delta units have it; the other two do not.

Is the anchor included? The rule requires it on units in scope, but listings vary in whether they say so. Two picks here state the tip-over restraint is included. One states an anti-tip device is included. One ships mounting hardware. One does not say.

Published drawer interiors. This is the spec that decides whether the dresser is useful, and it is almost never in the headline. An interior drawer height of 4.75 inches takes folded t-shirts; 5.75 inches takes folded sweatshirts. A 20.75-inch interior width lets two children split a drawer side by side. Four of the five publish interior drawer dimensions, which is a better rate than most furniture categories manage.

Emissions certification. GREENGUARD Gold tests for chemical emissions - more than 10,000 chemicals and VOCs - and matters on a piece of furniture that sits in a bedroom for a decade. Two of the three Delta units carry it; the third, at the same price, does not.

The two picks that fall outside the rule, and why they are still here

The Gizoon is 32.3 inches tall and 52.9 pounds. On its own published numbers it is a free-standing clothing storage unit over 27 inches and over 30 pounds, which puts it inside the scope of 16 CFR part 1261 whether its listing engages with that or not. It does include an anti-tip device, and it is the only dresser here that will tell you its load rating - 33 pounds per drawer and 55 pounds on the top. The silence about stability testing from the one brand willing to publish a capacity figure is genuinely odd, and it is why this dresser is ranked fourth rather than second despite being a quarter of the price.

The Sorbus is the interesting case. It is 45 inches tall - the tallest thing on this page - on a footprint 11.8 inches deep, and it weighs 18.6 pounds. That last number puts it below the 30-pound threshold, so the federal clothing storage unit rule does not reach it at all. A tall, light tower is the least stable geometry in this category, and the rule written for tip-over hazards does not apply to it.

We have kept it on the page for two honest reasons. Its drawers are fabric bins, which cannot be stood on - so the specific climbing sequence that tips a wooden dresser is not available on this one. And it ships with mounting hardware and goes up in minutes, which for a rented room or a closet is sometimes the only option that fits. Buy it anchored or do not buy it.

A wall bracket and fixings for securing furniture
Two brackets and twenty minutes. This is the part of a dresser purchase that actually changes the risk, and it is the part most often left in the box.

Sizing a dresser to the room, not to the clothes

The three Delta dressers are all around 47 inches wide. That is close to four feet of unbroken wall, and in a small shared bedroom - the kind with a bunk bed along one wall - that wall may not exist. Measure before you fall for a six-drawer unit.

Depth matters more than it looks. A 20-inch-deep dresser in a 9-foot-wide room with a bunk bed takes a real bite out of the walking space, and the drawer needs another 13 inches in front of it to open. The Gizoon at 16.2 inches and the Sorbus at 11.8 inches exist for exactly this problem.

Height is a safety spec, not a style choice. The horizontal-force test in the standard is applied at the highest hand-hold, no higher than 56 inches, which tells you something about where the designers of the test expected children to pull. A low wide dresser is inherently harder to tip than a tall narrow one, and it also gives you a usable surface at a child’s height - which is where a lamp and a water glass belong. Our kids desk lamp roundup covers what goes on top of it.

If the room genuinely has no wall left, the honest answer is often not a dresser at all. See under-bed storage for kids rooms for the space nobody uses, and how to organize a shared kids room for the zoning that makes two children’s clothes fit one piece of furniture.

Interlocking drawers: useful, and mildly annoying

Worth being straight about this, because it is the feature we rank highest and it is the one you will notice daily. An interlock means that when one drawer is open, the others are held shut. For a child standing at the dresser it removes the staircase. For an adult putting away a basket of laundry it means closing each drawer before opening the next.

That is a real trade and most parents make it gladly after they have pictured the alternative. It also has a second-order benefit on a wide dresser: with only one drawer out at a time, the load is never cantilevered as far forward.

What an interlock does not do is replace the anchor. The standard’s interlock test requires the mechanism to hold 30 pounds of force for 5 seconds - a meaningful figure, and well under the weight of the child the carpet test models at 60 pounds.

What we would not buy

A dresser with a television on top. A dresser is not a TV stand; the combined center of gravity is the problem and the TV adds weight exactly where it hurts. If a screen has to live in the room, it belongs on the wall.

A tall narrow tower without anchoring it. See the Sorbus discussion above. Geometry does not care how careful you intend to be.

A dresser bought secondhand from before September 2023. The federal rule applies to units manufactured after that date, so an older dresser was never required to pass any of those three tests. It may still be a perfectly good piece of furniture - but it is a piece of furniture you must anchor, and you should check the CPSC recall listings for the model before you put a child’s clothes in it. The same logic we apply to buying a secondhand bunk bed applies here.

A listing that will not tell you a single interior dimension. Drawer interiors are the whole point of a dresser, and a brand that photographs six drawers without measuring one of them is telling you what the drawers are like.

Key takeaways

  • Clothing storage units are regulated: 16 CFR part 1261 incorporates ASTM F2057 for units manufactured after September 1, 2023.
  • A unit is in scope if it is free-standing, at least 27 in tall, at least 30 lb, and has at least 3.2 cubic feet of enclosed storage.
  • The rule requires an anti-tip device meeting ASTM F3096 to be packaged with the product. It does not require anyone to install it.
  • Interlocking drawers remove the staircase a child builds out of open drawers. Three of the five picks here have them.
  • Interior drawer height is the spec that decides whether the dresser is useful: 4.75 in takes t-shirts, 5.75 in takes sweatshirts.
  • A tall light tower is the least stable thing in this category and the rule's 30 lb threshold may not even reach it. Anchor it.

#1 · The dresser to buy if you buy one dresser

Delta Children Universal 6 Drawer Dresser with Interlocking Drawers

Delta Children

Interlocking drawers, a tip-over restraint in the box, GREENGUARD Gold, and the ASTM standard named by number on the listing.

9.0/ 10
Delta Children Universal 6 Drawer Dresser with Interlocking Drawers
Published specifications, as stated by the manufacturer
Guardrail height above mattressNot applicable
Stated weight limit (per bunk)Not published by the manufacturer
Manufacturer minimum ageNot applicable
Mattress thickness ceilingNot applicable
Materials / constructionNew Zealand pine and TSCA-compliant engineered wood, non-toxic lead- and phthalate-safe paint; 47.25 x 20.75 x 34.75 in, 119 lb, interior drawer 18.75 x 13.5 x 4.75 in

What works

  • States it is tested to meet the current requirements of ASTM F2057, the mandatory tip-over standard - by number, not by implication
  • Interlocking drawer system limits how many drawers open at once, which is the mechanism the standard's interlock test exists for
  • Tip-over restraint included, not sold separately
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified for chemical emissions, tested against more than 10,000 chemicals and VOCs

What doesn’t

  • No published load rating per drawer or for the top surface
  • 119 lb and wide - 47 inches of wall, which a small bedroom may not have
  • Flat-pack assembly on a 119 lb carcass is a two-person job
  • Interlocks are a mild daily annoyance for the adult putting laundry away

The catch: A tip-over restraint in the box is not a tip-over restraint in the wall. Every stability claim on this dresser assumes it is anchored, and the standard's carpet-and-child-weight test exists precisely because so many never get fixed to anything.

Delta Children Perry 6 Drawer Dresser

Delta Children

The same interlocks and the same named standard, with an inch more depth inside every drawer.

Delta Children Perry 6 Drawer Dresser
Published specifications, as stated by the manufacturer
Guardrail height above mattressNot applicable
Stated weight limit (per bunk)Not published by the manufacturer
Manufacturer minimum ageNot applicable

Materials / constructionPine and TSCA-compliant engineered wood; listing states assembled 47.5 x 19.5 x 34.75 in, 126.3 lb shipped, interior drawer 18.5 x 13.5 x 5.75 in

What works

  • Interior drawer height of 5.75 in is a full inch deeper than the Universal, which is the difference between folded sweatshirts fitting and not
  • Tested to meet the current requirements of ASTM F2057, with the interlocking drawer system
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified
  • Finish is specified as wipe-clean, which on a child's furniture is a real spec

What doesn’t

  • No load rating published for drawers or top
  • The listing's own assembled height and the catalog dimension differ by about an inch - measure before you plan a changing top
  • Heaviest of the three Delta units as shipped, at 126 lb
  • Does not state whether a tip-over restraint is included, unlike its two siblings

The catch: The product page does not say a tip-over restraint is in the box, where the Universal and the Essex both do. Assume you are buying an anchor kit separately and budget the ten dollars; do not assume it turns up in the carton.

#3 · Two children sharing one dresser

Delta Children Essex 6 Drawer Dresser

Delta Children

The widest drawer interior of the three and the heaviest carcass, with the anchor stated as included - but no GREENGUARD claim.

Delta Children Essex 6 Drawer Dresser
Published specifications, as stated by the manufacturer

What works

  • 20.75 in of interior drawer width is the most here - two children's clothes split side by side without stacking
  • Tested to meet the current requirements of ASTM F2057, with interlocking drawers
  • Listing states the tip-over restraint is included for anchoring to the wall
  • Solid-wood mix of pine, poplar and rubberwood rather than engineered wood alone

What doesn’t

  • No GREENGUARD Gold claim, unlike the Universal and the Perry at the same price
  • 140 lb is the heaviest thing on this page to carry upstairs
  • Shallowest drawers of the three Delta units at 4.75 in interior height
  • No published load rating

The catch: At the same price as two siblings that are GREENGUARD Gold certified, this one is not - and on furniture that sits in a bedroom for a decade, an emissions certification is a real differentiator rather than a box-tick. Buy it for the drawer width, not on the assumption that it is the same dresser in a different color.

#4 · A small room on a small budget

Gizoon 4 Drawer Dresser

Gizoon

The only pick here that publishes what its drawers and its top will actually hold - and the only one that never names the stability standard.

7.3/ 10
Gizoon 4 Drawer Dresser
Published specifications, as stated by the manufacturer
Guardrail height above mattressNot applicable
Stated weight limit (per bunk)33 lb per drawer, 55 lb on the top surface
Manufacturer minimum ageNot applicable
Mattress thickness ceilingNot applicable
Materials / constructionMDF with integrated handles and rounded corners; 28.1 x 16.2 x 32.3 in, 52.9 lb

What works

  • Publishes a load rating - 33 lb per drawer and 55 lb on the top - which none of the wood dressers here will do
  • Anti-tip device included in the box
  • 28 inches wide fits a wall the 47-inch dressers cannot
  • Recessed handles and rounded corners, so nothing protrudes at a toddler's head height

What doesn’t

  • Never names ASTM F2057 or any stability standard, and at 32 in tall and 53 lb it is squarely inside the federal rule's scope
  • MDF carcass, which does not survive being dragged across a room the way plywood does
  • No interlocking drawers - all four open at once
  • Four drawers rather than six, so it is a one-child dresser

The catch: At 32.3 inches tall and 52.9 pounds, this is a clothing storage unit inside the scope of 16 CFR part 1261 whether its listing engages with that or not. An anti-tip device in the box is good; silence on the stability testing, from the one brand here willing to publish a load rating, is odd.

#5 · A rented room, or a child who pulls drawers out to climb

Sorbus 6 Drawer Fabric Dresser for Kids

Sorbus

Forty-five inches tall and under nineteen pounds, which is exactly why it ships with mounting hardware and why you must use it.

6.8/ 10
Sorbus 6 Drawer Fabric Dresser for Kids
Published specifications, as stated by the manufacturer
Guardrail height above mattressNot applicable
Stated weight limit (per bunk)Not published by the manufacturer
Manufacturer minimum ageNot applicable

Materials / constructionSteel frame with two-layer non-woven fabric drawers and a water-resistant wooden top; 15.75 x 11.8 x 45 in, 18.6 lb, drawers approx 13.75 x 7 in and 8 in deep

What works

  • Fabric drawers cannot be stood on, which removes the climbing step a wooden drawer gives a toddler
  • Mounting hardware included and assembly takes minutes with no tools of your own
  • 15.75 in wide and 11.8 in deep - it fits a closet or the gap beside a bunk
  • 18.6 lb means one adult can move it, and a rented wall only needs one bracket

What doesn’t

  • No stability standard named, and at 18.6 lb it sits below the 30 lb threshold of the federal clothing storage unit rule
  • 45 in tall on an 11.8 in footprint is the least stable geometry on this page, anchored or not
  • Fabric drawers sag under heavy clothes and cannot be wiped clean
  • No published load rating

The catch: This is the one on this page where anchoring is not advice, it is the product working as intended. A 45-inch tower weighing 19 pounds is light enough to come over on a child hanging off the top drawer, and light enough that the federal clothing storage unit rule does not reach it - so the bracket is the only stability test it will ever face.

#ad — how we earn

Questions parents actually ask

Are kids dressers required to pass a tip-over test?

Clothing storage units manufactured after September 1, 2023 are covered by 16 CFR part 1261, which incorporates ASTM F2057. A unit is in scope if it is free-standing and meets all three criteria: at least 27 inches tall, at least 30 pounds, and at least 3.2 cubic feet of enclosed storage. The rule includes three stability tests and requires an anti-tip device meeting ASTM F3096 to be packaged with the product.

What is the STURDY rule for dressers?

It is the shorthand people use for the federal clothing storage unit stability requirements now codified at 16 CFR part 1261. The practical effect for a buyer is that a dresser in scope has to pass stability testing with a clothing load, a 10-pound horizontal pull at a hand-hold no higher than 56 inches, and a 60-pound child-weight apparatus hung on the drawer or door most likely to cause a tip-over, on carpet.

Do interlocking drawers actually help?

Yes, and for a specific reason: they remove the staircase. The tip-over sequence usually involves a child opening several drawers and climbing, which moves the dresser’s center of gravity out past its front feet. An interlock holds the other drawers shut while one is open. The standard requires interlocks, where fitted, to hold 30 pounds of force for 5 seconds - which is why they are not a substitute for anchoring.

Does a fabric dresser need to be anchored?

More than a wooden one, not less. A tall fabric-drawer tower is light - the one on this page is 18.6 pounds at 45 inches tall - which means it is easy for a child to pull over and light enough that the federal rule’s 30-pound threshold may not even apply to it. The CPSC guidance notes fabric dressers can fall in scope when they meet the criteria; a light one simply does not. Use the included mounting hardware.

How many drawers does a child need?

Four is enough for one small child’s everyday clothes; six makes sense when two children share a dresser or when bedding and out-of-season clothes live in it too. The more useful question is interior drawer height - a 4.75-inch drawer holds folded t-shirts and a 5.75-inch drawer holds folded sweatshirts, and that one inch decides whether the dresser feels full.

What does GREENGUARD Gold mean on a dresser?

It is a chemical-emissions certification: the product has been tested for more than 10,000 chemicals and VOCs and certified as contributing to cleaner indoor air. It says nothing about stability - that is ASTM F2057 - and the two certifications are worth checking separately. Two of the three Delta dressers on this page carry GREENGUARD Gold; the third, at the same price, does not.

Can you put a dresser under a loft bed?

Often yes, and it is a good use of the space, but check two things: the dresser’s height against the published clearance under the deck, and whether the top drawer still opens with the bed frame above it. A low wide dresser works better under a loft than a tall one - our what fits under a loft bed guide has the measurements.
