What we do instead is read the published specifications and check them against the rules that actually govern children’s beds in the United States: the federal standard for children’s bunk beds (16 CFR Part 1513), the ASTM F1427 requirements it incorporates, and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ guidance on upper-bunk age. Where a manufacturer publishes no number, we write “not published by the manufacturer” rather than guess — that absence is itself worth knowing. We read owner feedback at volume for the things specs can’t tell you, and we label it as signal, not proof.

A toddler mattress is a crib mattress that has been flipped, in most cases. Dual-sided models have a firmer infant side and a slightly softer toddler side, and using one from birth to four is the cheapest honest way through this.
The three things that matter
Firmness. Firm is correct for infants and remains appropriate for toddlers. Softness in a children’s mattress is not a feature to chase — the comfort a light sleeper experiences comes from the surface rather than from sinking in.
A removable, washable, waterproof cover. This is the one that decides how you feel about the mattress at two in the morning. A cover that unzips and goes in the machine is worth more than any other feature on the list, and a mattress without one is a mattress you will be sponging.
Certification that means something. GREENGUARD Gold tests for chemical emissions, which matters in a small closed bedroom where a child spends eleven hours a night. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 covers the textile. Both are audited. “Non-toxic” on a label, on its own, is not.

The trade nobody mentions: foam holds heat
A foam core is firm, affordable and warm. If your child regularly wakes up damp with sweat, a breathable-core mattress handles it considerably better — and costs roughly twice as much. That is the real decision in this category, and it is worth making deliberately rather than by price.
Thickness, and why it is not a comfort question
Thinner mattresses feel less substantial to lift and are entirely adequate for a child. Depth in an adult mattress exists to give a heavier body enough material to sink into without bottoming out; a three-year-old does not have that problem.
Where thickness genuinely matters is on a raised bed, where it is capped by the guardrail rather than chosen. That is a bunk bed problem rather than a toddler bed one, but it arrives sooner than parents expect.
Fit
A crib mattress should fit the frame snugly — the standard check is that you cannot fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the frame on any side. That gap is an entrapment risk in a crib and remains worth checking in a toddler bed.

Sheets
Buy at least three fitted sheets, and buy them in the fiber your child gets on with rather than the cheapest.
