Toddler Beds

Can you use a crib mattress in a toddler bed?

Yes, and most toddler beds are designed for exactly that. A standard crib mattress and a toddler mattress are the same object at the same dimensions - but there are three things worth checking on the one you already own.

The short answer

Yes. In the United States a standard crib mattress and a toddler mattress are the same size — about 52 by 28 inches — and almost every toddler bed on the market is built to take the crib mattress you already own. The Dream On Me, Delta Children and similar frames all state that they use a standard crib mattress.

Reusing it is the intended path, not a shortcut. The three things to check before you do are firmness, waterproofing and fit: no gap wider than two fingers between the mattress and the frame on any side.

Why the sizes match

Full-size crib mattresses in the US are made to a regulated dimension — not less than 27¼ by 51⅝ inches, and no more than six inches thick — so that any compliant mattress fits any compliant crib without a dangerous gap. Toddler bed manufacturers build to that same figure deliberately, which is why “uses a standard crib mattress” appears in the specification of nearly every toddler frame rather than a separate toddler-mattress size.

The practical consequence is that the mattress is the one part of the crib-to-bed transition that costs nothing. Our toddler bed sizes guide has the full dimension set, and the bedding sizes guide confirms the sheets carry over too — toddler fitted sheets are sold at 28 by 52 inches with pocket depths published around 8 inches.

The three checks

1. Firmness. A crib mattress is firm by design, and firmness is a safety property for an infant rather than a comfort preference. That firmness is still appropriate in a toddler bed and it is also the property most likely to have degraded: press down in the middle and at the head, and if there is a dip or the foam does not spring back, the mattress is finished regardless of how it looks.

2. The waterproof layer. Most crib mattresses have a wipeable or removable waterproof cover, and this matters more in a toddler bed than it did in a crib because night-time accidents arrive with bed-leaving independence. Check that the cover still seals and that it is machine-washable; if it has split, a separate mattress protector is the cheaper fix than a new mattress.

3. Fit in the new frame. Put the mattress in and run a hand around all four edges. No gap should take more than two fingers. This is the same gap principle the crib standard is built on, and it applies in a toddler bed because the frame sides and integrated rails are only doing their job if the child cannot slip between them and the mattress.

Reuse it, or replace it
What you findWhat to do
Firm, springs back, cover intactReuse it — this is the intended path
Visible dip or foam that stays compressedReplace it; a sagging mattress is not a thickness problem
Cover split or no longer waterproofAdd a protector, or replace if the core is also soggy
Gap over two fingers at any edgeWrong mattress for this frame — do not use it
Thicker than 6 inCheck the frame's specification; many toddler beds assume crib thickness
Dual-sided infant/toddler mattressFlip to the toddler side if it has one

The mattress is the part of the transition that usually costs nothing. The checks take two minutes.

Dual-sided mattresses, and which way up

Some crib mattresses are made with two different firmness levels — an extra-firm infant side and a slightly softer toddler side. If yours is one of those, flipping it is part of the transition and it is easy to miss, because nothing on the mattress tells you that the bed has changed. Check the label on the side panel.

A single-firmness crib mattress does not need replacing for softness. Firm is correct for a toddler too; the reason to buy a dedicated toddler mattress is a worn-out core, not a preference for more give. Our toddler mattress roundup covers the dual-use options, including one that is GREENGUARD Gold certified with an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 washable cover.

Thickness is a frame question, not a comfort question

Crib mattresses are capped at six inches and toddler beds are designed around that. If you are tempted by something thicker, check the frame’s integrated side rails: a thicker mattress raises the sleeping surface and reduces how much rail stands above it, which is the same arithmetic that governs a bunk bed guardrail. A toddler bed is low, so the stakes are lower — the principle is identical.

What about a converted crib?

If the “toddler bed” is your crib with the front rail removed, the mattress stays exactly where it is and the only new question is the rail. A converted crib is a genuinely fiddly thing to add an aftermarket rail to, because most universal rails have nothing to grip — there are rails built for the job, and our conversion comparison and rail roundup both cover it.

One thing to check on a conversion: the mattress support should be at its lowest setting. A crib mattress platform sitting high is fine inside a crib with full-height sides and is not fine once one side is open.

Buying spare sheets is the better spend

If you were budgeting for a new mattress and the one you have passes the three checks, the money is better spent on a second and third sheet set. The real requirement in a toddler bed is being able to strip it at two in the morning and still have a made bed, and a cotton jersey three-piece set is cheap enough that a 2 a.m. change is an inconvenience rather than a crisis. Our toddler bedding roundup has the sets with published pocket depths.

Key takeaways

  • A standard US crib mattress and a toddler mattress are the same 52 x 28 in size.
  • Check firmness, the waterproof cover, and that no edge gap takes more than two fingers.
  • Firm is still correct for a toddler. Replace for a worn core, not for softness.
  • If the mattress is dual-sided, flip it to the toddler side - nothing prompts you to.
  • On a converted crib, drop the mattress platform to its lowest setting.

The crib-to-toddler-bed handover

Graco Premium Foam Crib & Toddler Mattress

Graco

A firm, washable, dual-use crib and toddler mattress with both of the certifications parents actually look for.

Graco Premium Foam Crib & Toddler Mattress
Published specifications, as stated by the manufacturer
Guardrail height above mattressNot applicable
Stated weight limit (per bunk)Not published by the manufacturer
Manufacturer minimum ageNot published by the manufacturer
Mattress thickness ceilingNot applicable
Materials / constructionFoam core, waterproof machine-washable OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified cover, GREENGUARD Gold certified

What works

  • The cover comes off and goes in the washing machine, which matters more than anything else at this age
  • Firm support appropriate for infants and toddlers
  • GREENGUARD Gold and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified
  • Fits both the crib and the toddler bed it converts into

What doesn’t

  • Foam traps more heat than a breathable-core mattress
  • Firm enough that older toddlers may find it unforgiving
  • Thin relative to a twin mattress, which is by design but still a surprise

The catch: Foam holds heat. If your child sleeps hot, a breathable-core mattress handles it better, and you will pay roughly twice as much for that.

The first bed out of the crib

Dream On Me Emma 3-in-1 Convertible Toddler Bed

Dream On Me

Publishes a weight limit, runs four side rails and sits low enough that falling out is barely an event.

8.2/ 10
Dream On Me Emma 3-in-1 Convertible Toddler Bed
Published specifications, as stated by the manufacturer
Guardrail height above mattressFour integrated side safety rails (height not published)
Stated weight limit (per bunk)50 lb
Manufacturer minimum ageNot published by the manufacturer
Mattress thickness ceilingUses a standard crib mattress
Materials / constructionSolid pinewood, GREENGUARD Gold certified

What works

  • Low-to-floor design means a roll-out is inches, not feet
  • Four side rails come with the bed rather than as an accessory
  • Takes the crib mattress you already own
  • Converts to a table and two chairs when the bed is outgrown

What doesn’t

  • 50 lb limit is reached by a lot of five-year-olds
  • Crib-mattress footprint is genuinely small for a tall four-year-old
  • Conversion to table and chairs is charming but rarely used

The catch: The 50 lb limit is the real lifespan of this bed, and it is shorter than the marketing implies. Plenty of children hit 50 lb around age five, which is well before they are ready for a twin.

The second and third set every toddler bed needs

American Baby Company 3-Piece Cotton Jersey Toddler Sheet Set

American Baby Company

The spare set. Cotton jersey, three pieces, cheap enough that a 2 a.m. change is an inconvenience rather than a crisis.

American Baby Company 3-Piece Cotton Jersey Toddler Sheet Set
Published specifications, as stated by the manufacturer
Guardrail height above mattressNot applicable
Stated weight limit (per bunk)Not applicable
Manufacturer minimum ageNot published by the manufacturer
Mattress thickness ceilingSized for all standard 28 x 52 in toddler and crib mattresses
Materials / construction100% natural cotton jersey knit

What works

  • Cheapest entry on the page by a wide margin, which is the point of a spare set
  • Cotton jersey is stretchy, so the fitted sheet grips rather than bunching
  • Contoured fitted sheet plus a flat sheet fitted at one end and a pillowcase
  • Built for repeated washing, which is the only test toddler sheets face

What doesn’t

  • Three pieces, not four - there is no comforter, so this is not a complete bedding set
  • Jersey knit is warmer than percale and pills sooner
  • Plain colors only, which a toddler with opinions may object to
  • No fiber certification stated

The catch: This is a sheet set, not a bedding set, and we have included it deliberately. Every other entry here is a one-off purchase; this is the one you buy twice, because the real requirement in a toddler bed is being able to strip it at two in the morning and still have a made bed. Pair it with a comforter you already own.

#ad — how we earn

Questions parents actually ask

Does a crib mattress fit a toddler bed?

Yes. Standard US crib mattresses are about 52 by 28 inches and toddler beds are built to that dimension — most listings state “uses a standard crib mattress” explicitly.

Is a toddler mattress the same as a crib mattress?

In size, yes. Some are sold as dual-sided with a firmer infant face and a slightly softer toddler face, in which case you flip it. A single-firmness crib mattress does not need replacing.

How do I know if my crib mattress is too worn to reuse?

Press down in the middle and at the head end. A visible dip, or foam that stays compressed rather than springing back, means it is finished. A split or no-longer-waterproof cover is usually fixable with a protector.

How big a gap is acceptable between the mattress and the toddler bed frame?

No more than two fingers at any edge. The frame sides and integrated rails only work if a child cannot slip between them and the mattress.

Can you put a thicker mattress in a toddler bed?

Check the frame specification first. Crib mattresses are capped at six inches and toddler beds assume that; a thicker mattress raises the sleeping surface and leaves less of the integrated rail standing above it.
