Kids Bedding
The best toddler bedding sets
Toddler bedding is sized to a 28 by 52 inch mattress and almost nothing else about it is standard. Fiber decides whether your child sleeps through; elastic decides whether the covers are still on the bed at 2 a.m.

How we chose
We are a small publisher, not a testing lab. We don’t buy, assemble or sleep in the beds we write about, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What we do instead is read the published specifications and check them against the rules that actually govern children’s beds in the United States: the federal standard for children’s bunk beds (16 CFR Part 1513), the ASTM F1427 requirements it incorporates, and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ guidance on upper-bunk age. Where a manufacturer publishes no number, we write “not published by the manufacturer” rather than guess — that absence is itself worth knowing. We read owner feedback at volume for the things specs can’t tell you, and we label it as signal, not proof.

The short answer
A toddler bedding set is sized to fit a standard 28 by 52 inch toddler or crib mattress - the same mattress, in most cases, that was in the crib. That part is genuinely standardized. Nothing else is.
Two things decide which set is right. Fiber content decides whether your child sleeps through the night or wakes up too warm, and elastic decides whether the covers are still on the bed in the morning. Everything else - pattern, reversibility, thread-count language - is noise.
The criteria this page ranks on
Toddler bedding has no safety standard to rank against, which makes this an unusual page for this site. There is no guardrail height, no weight limit and no federal construction rule. So we ranked on the four things that are published and that actually change the outcome:
Fiber content. Cotton or polyester, and if cotton, what weave. This is the one that affects sleep rather than appearance, and it is printed on every listing.
Published mattress fit. The fitted sheet dimensions, and ideally the pocket depth. A sheet that pops off a corner at midnight is the most common complaint in this category and it is entirely a fit problem.
Whether it stays on the bed. Elastic on the comforter and the top sheet, or nothing. One set here solves this and the rest do not pretend to.
What the fourth piece actually is. “Four-piece set” is doing a lot of work in this category, and on one of these picks the fourth piece is a decorative sham in a standard adult pillow size. That is worth knowing before it arrives.
How the picks compare on published details
| Set | Fiber | Published fit | Fourth piece |
|---|---|---|---|
| American Baby Company percale | 100% cotton percale | 28 x 52 in | 19 x 26 in pillow sham |
| Delta Children reversible | Polyester / 80-20 poly-cotton | 27 x 52 in | Standard pillowcase |
| EVERYDAY KIDS | 100% brushed microfiber | 52 x 28 in, 8 in pocket | 30 x 20 in pillowcase |
| Joyreap cotton | 100% cotton, weave not stated | 28 x 52 in, 8 in pocket | 20 x 30 in pillowcase |
| American Baby Company jersey | 100% cotton jersey | 28 x 52 in | Three-piece set only |
| PHF minky | Microfiber, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | 28 x 52 in, 8 in pocket | 20 x 30 in pillowcase |
| UOZZI BEDDING | 100% microfiber | 28 x 52 in, 8 in pocket | 20 x 30 in pillowcase |
Four of the seven publish a pocket depth. One publishes a fit of 27 inches rather than 28, which is a real inch on a mattress that is only 28 wide. Two are cotton throughout, one is cotton with the weave unnamed, and the rest are polyester in one form or another. One carries a named textile certification.
Why fiber is the whole decision
A toddler who gets out of bed at 11 p.m. is usually either too warm or not tired. You cannot do much about the second one with a bedding purchase. You can do a great deal about the first.
Microfiber is finely spun polyester. It is soft from the first wash, cheap, and it does not breathe: body heat and moisture stay in the fabric rather than passing through it. For a child who runs cold that is a feature. For a child who sleeps hot it is the reason they are standing in your doorway. Cotton percale - a plain, tight weave - does the opposite: it starts crisp rather than soft, it takes a few washes to relax, and it moves heat and moisture away from the sleeper all night.
Jersey knit sits between the two. It is cotton, so it breathes, but the knit structure holds more air and therefore more warmth than percale, and it stretches, which is why jersey fitted sheets grip a mattress so well. Our full cotton versus microfiber comparison works through the trade on the larger sizes, and all of it applies here.
The practical rule: if your child wakes up damp, or kicks everything off and then gets cold, the problem is almost always a polyester set and the fix is cotton. If they sleep still and complain about being cold, the cheap microfiber sets are genuinely the better buy, and there is no reason to spend double.

The 28 by 52 standard, and the one set that is not
Toddler bedding is one of the few genuinely standardized products in a child’s room. A standard US crib mattress is 28 inches by 52 inches, and because a toddler bed almost always reuses the crib mattress, toddler bedding is cut to the same size. Six of the seven sets here publish exactly that.
The Delta set publishes 27 by 52. That is not a typo on our part - the listing says it - and on a 28-inch mattress an inch of missing width is enough to make a fitted sheet work harder at the corners. It is a compensated-for inch rather than a fatal one, because the set compensates with elastic everywhere, but it is the sort of detail worth reading before you decide the pattern.
What varies far more than width is depth. A 4-inch foam crib mattress and a 6-inch innerspring one take very different fitted sheets, and most toddler sets never mention a pocket depth at all. Four of these publish 8 inches, which covers anything a toddler bed will hold. Our kids bedding sizes guide has the full dimension table, and toddler bed sizes and dimensions covers the frame side of it.
Check the pillow before you buy the set
“Four-piece” sets include a pillow cover of some kind, and the sizes are all over the place: 19 x 26 inches on one pick here, 20 x 30 on three others, 27.5 x 18.3 on another. A toddler pillow is small and flat, and a standard-size sham or pillowcase on a toddler pillow is loose fabric in a bed - which is the opposite of what you want. Buy the pillow and the set together, or confirm the cover fits the pillow you already own.
Keeping the covers on the bed
The move out of a crib removes the walls, and most toddlers respond by redistributing their bedding across the room. One set here is designed around that specific problem: the Delta comforter and top sheet both have elastic corners, so they fasten to the mattress and cannot be kicked clear.
It works, and it has a cost. A comforter fixed at the corners cannot be turned, folded back or pulled over a head, and it only goes on the bed one way. For the first year in a toddler bed that is a fair trade. By four or five, when a child wants to make their own bed and arrange it themselves, the same feature gets in the way.
The alternative solution is zip-up bedding, which attaches the whole made bed to the mattress along a zipper - a different approach to the same problem, and one we cover in best zip-up kids bedding. For a toddler bed it tends to be overkill, but it is the right answer for a top bunk later.
Everything else in this roundup relies on a fitted sheet and gravity. The jersey set grips best because knitted cotton stretches; the percale and poly sets both publish a comforter and a top sheet “fitted at one end”, which is a half-measure that genuinely helps - the foot of the bed stays put and the child cannot slide the whole thing onto the floor in one go.
How many sets you actually need
Two, minimum, and three is not excessive. The first year in a toddler bed overlaps with the end of potty training and with whatever stomach bug is going round nursery, and the difference between a bad night and a disaster is whether there is a clean, dry, made bed available at two in the morning.
That argues for buying one good set and one or two cheap spares rather than three mid-priced ones. The cotton percale set at the top of this page is the one worth owning; the three-piece jersey sheet set is the one worth owning twice. That is why we have included a sheet set on a page about bedding sets - not as filler, but because the honest shopping list for a toddler bed is one comforter and several sets of sheets.
Microfiber has one real advantage here and it is drying time. A polyester set out of a cold wash will be dry in under an hour; cotton will not. On a night when the bed has to be remade from scratch, that matters more than breathability, which is another argument for mixing the two rather than committing to one.
Safe sleep, and why toddler bedding is a toddler purchase
Standard infant safe-sleep guidance keeps pillows, comforters, quilts and loose blankets out of the sleep space for the first year. Toddler bedding sets include all four of those things, which is why they are sold for toddler beds and not for cribs - even though the mattress underneath is often the same one.
So the sequence matters. The set goes on when the child moves into the toddler bed, not when they are still in the crib with a crib mattress of the same size. If you are weighing the timing of that move, our guide to when to move from a crib to a toddler bed goes through the readiness signals, and best toddler beds covers the frames. Check the specific advice for your child with your pediatrician rather than with a bedding listing.
One certification is worth understanding because exactly one set here carries it. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests a finished fabric for harmful substances, and a named certification is better than the unverifiable “skin-friendly” language every other listing uses. It is a chemical-safety claim, not a comfort or temperature claim, and it does not make a plush polyester comforter breathe.
What decides price
Fiber, almost entirely. The cotton percale set costs roughly double the microfiber sets and the difference is in the material rather than the construction. Cotton of unnamed weave sits in between. Minky and plush faces add very little, because the plush is polyester too.
What you are not paying for is durability, and this is the part people get wrong. Toddler bedding has a short life: it is washed constantly, it is outgrown in two or three years when the child moves to a twin bed, and the pattern stops being acceptable well before the fabric fails. Buying for a decade of wear is the wrong frame. Buying one set that sleeps well and two that can go in the machine at midnight is the right one.
When the child does move up to a twin, none of this transfers - the mattress is 38 by 75 inches and every piece has to be replaced. Our kids bedding sets roundup is the next page in that sequence, and it is worth a look before you spend heavily on a toddler set for a child who is nearly four.
What we left off, and why we are saying so
We left off licensed character sets. They sell enormously well, children love them, and we have no objection to them - but the fiber content is almost always undisclosed polyester and the premium is paid for the print. If your child wants the dinosaur, buy the dinosaur; we just cannot rank it on anything.
We left off organic cotton toddler sets. We looked for one with a named GOTS certification, a published fit and current availability, and the ones we could find were either sheet-only, out of stock, or carried the word organic with no certifying body attached. We would rather name the gap than fill the slot with an unverifiable claim.
We also left off bedding-in-a-bag sets that bundle a sleeping bag or a decorative cushion to reach a higher piece count. The extra items are loose soft furnishings in a child’s bed, which is not something we want to recommend, and they inflate the piece count without improving the bed.
There is an age question underneath all of this, and it is worth settling first: when a toddler can use a pillow and blanket.
Key takeaways
- Toddler bedding fits a standard 28 by 52 inch mattress - six of these seven publish exactly that, one publishes 27 inches.
- Fiber is the decision that affects sleep: cotton percale for a hot sleeper, microfiber only for a child who runs cold.
- Four of the seven publish a fitted-sheet pocket depth of 8 inches. The rest leave mattress depth to chance.
- Elastic on the comforter and top sheet is the only real fix for a toddler who kicks the covers off - and it makes the set inflexible later.
- Buy one good set and two cheap spares, not three mid-priced ones. The bed has to be remakeable at 2 a.m.
The picks, in full
Every pick below carries the same spec block, so you can compare the numbers across this page and every other page on the site.
#1 · A child who kicks the covers off because they are too warm
American Baby Company 100% Cotton Percale 4-Piece Toddler Bedding Set
American Baby Company
The only set here that is 100% cotton percale throughout, which is the fiber that keeps a hot sleeper asleep.

| Guardrail height above mattress | Not applicable |
|---|---|
| Stated weight limit (per bunk) | Not applicable |
| Manufacturer minimum age | Not published by the manufacturer |
| Mattress thickness ceiling | Fits standard 28 x 52 in toddler and crib mattresses |
| Materials / construction | 100% cotton percale throughout: comforter, top sheet, fitted sheet and pillow sham |
What works
- Cotton percale breathes in a way microfiber does not, which is the single biggest sleep-quality difference in this roundup
- Comforter and top sheet are both fitted at one end, so they stay on a bed that gets thrashed
- Published to fit a standard 28 x 52 in mattress, the same size as a standard crib
- Machine wash cold and tumble dry low, which is what a toddler bed actually needs
What doesn’t
- The fourth piece is a 19 x 26 in pillow sham, not a toddler pillowcase - that is a standard adult pillow size
- Roughly double the price of the microfiber sets
- Percale starts crisp rather than soft and needs a few washes to relax
- Cotton creases, and it takes longer to dry than microfiber when you need the bed back tonight
The catch: The 19 by 26 inch pillow sham is the catch, and it is worth understanding before you order. That is a standard pillow size, not a toddler one, so it will not fit the small flat pillow most toddler beds use. You are buying a three-piece set with a decorative extra, and the pillowcase you actually need is a separate purchase.
#2 · A restless sleeper, and the parent who remakes the bed every morning
Delta Children 4-Piece Reversible Toddler Bedding Set
Delta Children
Elastic on the comforter and on the top sheet, which is the only real answer to a toddler who kicks everything onto the floor by midnight.

| Guardrail height above mattress | Not applicable |
|---|---|
| Stated weight limit (per bunk) | Not applicable |
| Manufacturer minimum age | Not published by the manufacturer |
| Mattress thickness ceiling | Fits a standard 27 x 52 in crib or toddler mattress |
| Materials / construction | Comforter 100% polyester with polyester fill; sheets and pillowcase 80% polyester, 20% cotton |
What works
- Elastic corners on both the comforter and the flat top sheet, so neither ends up on the floor
- Published piece dimensions: quilt 51.5 x 27 in, pillowcase 27.5 x 18.3 in
- Reversible comforter gives the bed two looks from one purchase
- A standard pillowcase size is included rather than a decorative sham
What doesn’t
- Polyester comforter with a poly-cotton sheet blend, so it sleeps warmer than the cotton sets
- The published fit is 27 x 52 in, an inch narrower than the 28 x 52 most other sets quote
- The fitted comforter means it only works one way up on the bed
- No fiber certification stated on the listing
The catch: The elastic that makes this set stay on is the same elastic that makes it inflexible. A comforter fitted at the corners cannot be turned sideways, folded back at the top or used on a different bed, and if your child wants it over their head it will fight them. Brilliant for the first year in a toddler bed, less useful afterward.
#3 · A toddler bed with a thicker mattress than the sheet expects
EVERYDAY KIDS 4-Piece Toddler Bedding Set
EVERYDAY KIDS
The only set that publishes a fitted-sheet pocket depth, which is the number that decides whether the sheet stays on a thick toddler mattress.

| Guardrail height above mattress | Not applicable |
|---|---|
| Stated weight limit (per bunk) | Not applicable |
| Manufacturer minimum age | Not published by the manufacturer |
| Mattress thickness ceiling | Fitted sheet 52 x 28 in with a published 8 in pocket; fits standard toddler and crib mattresses |
| Materials / construction | 100% brushed microfiber polyester throughout |
What works
- Every piece is published to the inch: comforter 57 x 42, flat sheet 60 x 45, fitted 52 x 28, pillowcase 30 x 20
- An 8 in fitted-sheet pocket is stated, which almost no toddler set tells you
- Brushed microfiber is soft from the first wash with no break-in period
- Cheap enough to own two, which is the real requirement at this age
What doesn’t
- 100% polyester, so it sleeps hotter than any of the cotton sets here
- Microfiber pills after enough wash cycles, and toddler bedding gets a lot of them
- No fiber certification stated
- Fade resistance is claimed but no standard is named
The catch: Microfiber traps heat, and a toddler who is too warm wakes up and then gets out of bed. If your child sleeps hot, the softness that sells this set is working against you and a cotton percale set is the better buy even at double the price. If they sleep cold, this is the best-documented set on the page.
#4 · Cotton on a budget, with a proper pillowcase in the box
Joyreap 4-Piece Cotton Toddler Bedding Set
Joyreap
100% cotton with a quilted comforter at roughly the price of the microfiber sets, and full published dimensions for all four pieces.

| Guardrail height above mattress | Not applicable |
|---|---|
| Stated weight limit (per bunk) | Not applicable |
| Manufacturer minimum age | Not published by the manufacturer |
| Mattress thickness ceiling | Fitted sheet 28 x 52 in with an 8 in pocket |
| Materials / construction | 100% cotton, quilted comforter with a reversible face |
What works
- 100% cotton at a price the percale sets cannot match
- Quilting stops the fill shifting into one corner after a few washes
- Reversible comforter and reversible pillowcase, so one set covers two looks
- Published dimensions on every piece, including the 8 in fitted pocket
What doesn’t
- The listing does not state the cotton weave, so breathability is harder to predict than on a named percale
- No fiber certification stated
- Patterns are strongly gendered on most colorways, which dates the set
- Cotton takes longer to dry than microfiber on a night when you need it back
The catch: This is cotton without the weave named, and the weave is where most of the difference lives - percale breathes, sateen does not, and the listing says neither. It is still cotton rather than polyester, which is the bigger of the two decisions, but do not expect it to feel like the percale set.
#5 · The second and third set every toddler bed needs
American Baby Company 3-Piece Cotton Jersey Toddler Sheet Set
American Baby Company
The spare set. Cotton jersey, three pieces, cheap enough that a 2 a.m. change is an inconvenience rather than a crisis.

| Guardrail height above mattress | Not applicable |
|---|---|
| Stated weight limit (per bunk) | Not applicable |
| Manufacturer minimum age | Not published by the manufacturer |
| Mattress thickness ceiling | Sized for all standard 28 x 52 in toddler and crib mattresses |
| Materials / construction | 100% natural cotton jersey knit |
What works
- Cheapest entry on the page by a wide margin, which is the point of a spare set
- Cotton jersey is stretchy, so the fitted sheet grips rather than bunching
- Contoured fitted sheet plus a flat sheet fitted at one end and a pillowcase
- Built for repeated washing, which is the only test toddler sheets face
What doesn’t
- Three pieces, not four - there is no comforter, so this is not a complete bedding set
- Jersey knit is warmer than percale and pills sooner
- Plain colors only, which a toddler with opinions may object to
- No fiber certification stated
The catch: This is a sheet set, not a bedding set, and we have included it deliberately. Every other entry here is a one-off purchase; this is the one you buy twice, because the real requirement in a toddler bed is being able to strip it at two in the morning and still have a made bed. Pair it with a comforter you already own.
#6 · A cold bedroom, and a toddler who settles better with texture
PHF 4-Piece Minky Toddler Bedding Set
PHF
The only set here with a named fiber certification on the listing, and the only one that publishes the weight of the comforter fill.

| Materials / construction | Premium microfiber with a minky dot face, 250 GSM down-alternative fill, certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 |
What works
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification is named on the listing, which no other set here does
- 250 GSM fill weight published, so you know what you are getting before it arrives
- Minky texture genuinely helps some children settle, and it is the cheapest way to test that
- Quilted construction stated to stop the fill shifting
What doesn’t
- Microfiber with a plush face is the warmest combination on this page
- Minky mats and flattens in a tumble dryer over time, so it needs low heat every wash
- Describing a minky-faced polyester comforter as breathable is a stretch
- Patterns are limited and lean heavily feminine
The catch: The certification is real and worth having - OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished fabric for harmful substances - but it says nothing about temperature. This is a warm set with a plush face, and if your child already sleeps hot, a certification will not fix that. Buy it for a cold room, not for a restless one.
#7 · Kitting out a toddler bed for the least money
UOZZI BEDDING 4-Piece Toddler Bedding Set
UOZZI BEDDING
The cheapest complete four-piece set here, in eight colorways, with the same published dimensions as sets costing half again as much.

| Materials / construction | 100% microfiber, reversible comforter and reversible pillowcase |
What works
- Lowest price for a complete four-piece set on this page
- Eight colorways including plain grays and whites, which is unusual in toddler bedding
- Reversible comforter and pillowcase
- Published dimensions on all four pieces, matching the better-documented sets
What doesn’t
- 100% microfiber, so it is among the warmest sets here
- The listing describes the comforter as an autumn and winter weight, so it is not an all-year set
- No fiber certification stated
- Nothing distinguishes it from the other microfiber sets except price and color choice
The catch: The listing itself says this comforter is for autumn and winter and recommends air conditioning or heating alongside it, which is an unusually frank admission that it is a seasonal weight. In a warm bedroom in July it will be too much, and you will be back to a sheet and a blanket. Price in a lighter summer cover.
Questions parents actually ask
What size is a toddler bedding set?
It is cut to fit a standard US toddler or crib mattress, 28 inches by 52 inches - and because a toddler bed usually reuses the crib mattress, the same bedding fits both frames. Six of the seven sets here publish exactly 28 by 52; one publishes 27 by 52, which is worth noticing on a mattress that is only an inch wider.
Is cotton or microfiber better for toddler bedding?
Cotton, for most children. Microfiber is finely spun polyester: soft and cheap, but it holds body heat and moisture instead of moving them away, and a toddler who is too warm gets out of bed. Microfiber wins on price and on drying time, which genuinely matters when the bed has to be remade overnight - see cotton vs microfiber for the full comparison.
How do I stop my toddler kicking the covers off?
Elastic is the only thing that reliably works. One set here has elastic corners on both the comforter and the top sheet so neither can be kicked clear; several others publish a comforter and top sheet “fitted at one end”, which anchors the foot of the bed. Zip-up bedding is the stronger version of the same idea and is covered separately in best zip-up kids bedding.
How many toddler bedding sets do I need?
Two at a minimum, three if the first year overlaps with potty training. The practical arrangement is one good comforter set that sleeps well, plus one or two cheap sheet sets so the bed can be stripped and remade at two in the morning without a crisis.
Can a toddler use a pillow and a comforter?
In a toddler bed, yes - that is the point at which bedding sets are sold for. Standard infant safe-sleep guidance keeps pillows, quilts and loose blankets out of the sleep space for the first year, which is why these sets are not crib products even though the mattress is often the same size. Confirm the timing for your own child with your pediatrician, and see when to move from a crib to a toddler bed for the readiness signals.
What is included in a 4-piece toddler bedding set?
Usually a comforter, a flat top sheet, a fitted bottom sheet and a pillow cover - but the fourth piece varies more than you would expect. On one pick here it is a 19 by 26 inch pillow sham, which is a standard adult size rather than a toddler one. Check the pillow cover dimension against the pillow you actually own.
Does toddler bedding fit a twin bed?
No. A twin mattress is 38 by 75 inches against a toddler mattress’s 28 by 52, so nothing transfers when the child moves up - every piece has to be replaced. If your child is close to the move, our kids bedding sets roundup is the page to read instead of this one.
