Bunk Beds

The best bunk beds with drawers

A bunk with drawers is two pieces of furniture in one footprint, which is the whole point in a shared room. These are the ones that publish what the drawers hold and what the bed is rated for.

#ad — how we earn

How we chose

We are a small publisher, not a testing lab. We don’t buy, assemble or sleep in the beds we write about, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What we do instead is read the published specifications and check them against the rules that actually govern children’s beds in the United States: the federal standard for children’s bunk beds (16 CFR Part 1513), the ASTM F1427 requirements it incorporates, and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ guidance on upper-bunk age. Where a manufacturer publishes no number, we write “not published by the manufacturer” rather than guess — that absence is itself worth knowing. We read owner feedback at volume for the things specs can’t tell you, and we label it as signal, not proof.

We earn a commission when you buy through our links. It never changes an ordering. Our full editorial policy.

The most storage per square foot in our registry belongs to the Harper & Bright Designs Twin Over Full Bunk Bed with Storage Stairs and Drawers — four compartments under the staircase plus three drawers under the bed, all published, on a frame that also splits into two separate beds later. It is the pick for a shared room that has to hold everything as well as everyone. It also publishes the lowest weight limits on this page, at 200 lb upper and 250 lb lower, so it is a bed for children rather than a bed for teenagers.

Drawers on a bunk come in three shapes and they are not interchangeable. There are under-bed drawers, which use the dead space beneath the bottom bunk and need floor clearance in front of them to open. There are staircase drawers, where each tread is a box — the best storage-per-square-foot answer, because the stairs were going to take that space anyway. And there are trundle-plus-drawer frames, where one bay is a third bed and the rest are storage. Which one you want depends entirely on whether the room needs a dresser or a spare bed.

What we looked at

Published drawer count first, because this is a category where photographs do a lot of work and listings do very little. Then the same four safety numbers we ask of every bed: guardrail height above the deck, stated weight limit per sleeping surface, manufacturer minimum age, and the mattress-thickness ceiling. Then the thing that decides whether built-in drawers are usable at all, which is how much floor you need in front of them.

That last point gets underestimated. A drawer under a bottom bunk needs its own depth again in clear floor to open fully. If the bunk sits three feet from the opposite wall and the drawers are two feet deep, you have a drawer that opens most of the way and a room you cannot walk through while it is open. Staircase drawers mostly dodge this, because they pull out into the space you already use to climb.

Storage bunks publish the least of any category

Four of the five picks here publish no guardrail height at all. That is not a reason to avoid the category — it is a reason to buy a tape measure and check the five-inch clearance yourself on the day the bed arrives, before anyone sleeps on the top deck. Our guardrail height guide shows exactly where to measure from.

A wooden bunk bed with a ladder and storage in a children's room
Under-bed drawers need their own depth again in clear floor to open fully — measure the walking space, not just the bed.

The material trade nobody mentions

Almost every bunk with built-in drawers in this price range is pine mixed with MDF, and the drawer glides are the first component to wear. That is the honest cost of getting a bed and a dresser for the price of a bed. The solid-pine alternative — the Max & Lily stairs-and-trundle frame — publishes 14 inches of rail and 400 lb per sleeping surface, survives being disassembled and rebuilt in a way MDF does not, and costs substantially more while offering less drawer volume.

One genuinely useful number does show up on the Harper & Bright stairs-and-drawers model: 7.6 inches of published slat spacing. That is unusual to see and it matters if you are putting a foam mattress on either deck, because wide slat spacing lets a foam mattress sag between the slats. If you are buying a foam mattress for a bunk, read whether you need a bunkie board before you decide.

Drawers or a trundle?

You usually cannot have both bays, so the question is what the room is short of. If the children have nowhere to put clothes, take drawers — a dresser is the piece of furniture a shared bedroom most often cannot fit. If a third child sleeps over most weekends, take the trundle; a trundle bunk sleeps three in a two-child footprint and the Harper & Bright trundle-and-drawers frame manages to offer both, with three drawers alongside the trundle bay.

A thing worth knowing about trundles: they have their own mattress ceiling and it is much lower than the bunks’. Max & Lily publish 5 inches recommended and 6 inches maximum on their trundle platforms, because the trundle has to roll back under the bottom bunk with the mattress on it. Buy a 10-inch mattress for a trundle and it becomes a permanent third bed in the middle of the floor. Our trundle roundup has the full set of published numbers.

Key takeaways

  • Staircase drawers are the best storage-per-square-foot answer, because the stairs claim that floor anyway.
  • Under-bed drawers need their own depth again in clear floor to open — measure the walking space.
  • Four of the five picks here publish no guardrail height. Check the 5 in clearance yourself on arrival.
  • Pine-and-MDF construction is the price of getting a bed and a dresser in one. Drawer glides wear first.
  • A trundle's mattress ceiling is far lower than a bunk's — 5 to 6 in on the models that publish one.

#1 · A shared room that has to hold everything as well as everyone

Harper & Bright Designs Twin Over Full Bunk Bed with Storage Stairs and Drawers

Harper & Bright Designs

Stairs, four stair compartments and three under-bed drawers at a price the solid-pine staircase bunks cannot touch, with the lowest published capacities here.

7.4/ 10
Harper & Bright Designs Twin Over Full Bunk Bed with Storage Stairs and Drawers
Published specifications, as stated by the manufacturer
Guardrail height above mattressNot published by the manufacturer
Stated weight limit (per bunk)200 lb upper, 250 lb lower
Manufacturer minimum ageNot published by the manufacturer
Mattress thickness ceilingNot published by the manufacturer
Materials / constructionSolid pine and MDF with iron alloy bolts, 7.6 in slat spacing

What works

  • Four compartments under the staircase plus three drawers under the bed, all published
  • Splits into two separate beds, which is the exit route when the children stop sharing
  • 34.84 in of published clearance between the bunks tells you whether an adult fits below
  • Slat spacing of 7.6 in is published, which is unusual and useful if you are buying a foam mattress

What doesn’t

  • 200 lb on the top bunk is the lowest stated capacity in this roundup and will not see a teenager out
  • No guardrail height published despite a full-length rail being the headline safety claim
  • MDF content makes repeated disassembly a bad idea
  • 91.73 in long by 54.33 in wide, so the staircase is not free

The catch: The 200 lb top-bunk figure is the thing to read twice. A twin-over-full is usually bought so the older child gets the bigger bed below, but families often swap the children around, and 200 lb is a number a growing teenager plus a mattress can get close to. Decide who sleeps where before you buy, not after.

#2 · A small room that needs storage and a spare bed

Harper & Bright Designs Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed With Trundle and 3 Drawers

Harper & Bright Designs

A trundle and three drawers under one frame at well under the price of the solid-pine specialists, with a published weight limit and nothing else.

7.4/ 10
Harper & Bright Designs Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed With Trundle and 3 Drawers
Published specifications, as stated by the manufacturer
Guardrail height above mattressNot published by the manufacturer
Stated weight limit (per bunk)400 lb top bunk and 400 lb bottom bunk on this listing
Manufacturer minimum ageNot published by the manufacturer
Mattress thickness ceilingNot published by the manufacturer
Materials / constructionPinewood and MDF with iron alloy bolt connections

What works

  • A trundle and three storage drawers on a single frame, which is two furniture purchases avoided
  • Wheels on the trundle unit, so it pulls out on carpet without lifting
  • Publishes a per-bunk weight limit, which the cheapest wood bunks often do not
  • Separates into two individual beds

What doesn’t

  • No guardrail height and no mattress ceiling published, so the 5 in clearance check is entirely yours to run
  • MDF in the mix means the frame tolerates being taken apart and rebuilt less well than solid pine
  • Harper & Bright publish very different weight limits across near-identical trundle models
  • Long assembly — a bunk, a trundle and three drawers share one manual

The catch: This brand's trundle bunks are not one product. We found listings from the same range rated 150 lb on the top bunk and listings rated 400 lb, in frames that look nearly identical in the photographs. Read the weight limit on the exact variant and color you are ordering, because it does not carry over.

#3 · Small rooms with nowhere to put clothes

Harper & Bright Designs Bunk Bed with Storage Staircase

Harper & Bright Designs

A staircase whose treads are drawers — genuinely the best storage-per-square-foot answer in a small shared room.

7.2/ 10
Harper & Bright Designs Bunk Bed with Storage Staircase
Published specifications, as stated by the manufacturer
Guardrail height above mattressNot published by the manufacturer
Stated weight limit (per bunk)Not published by the manufacturer
Manufacturer minimum ageNot published by the manufacturer
Mattress thickness ceilingNot published by the manufacturer
Materials / constructionSolid wood and engineered wood with drawer staircase

What works

  • Staircase drawers replace a dresser in a room that has no space for one
  • Stairs are far easier to climb at night than a ladder
  • Handrail on the staircase side
  • Stronger value than buying a bunk and a dresser separately

What doesn’t

  • No published guardrail, weight or mattress figures
  • The staircase is fixed to one side, so room layout is decided for you
  • Drawer glides are the first thing to wear at this price point

The catch: The staircase is fixed left or right depending on the variant you order, and it cannot be reversed after the fact the way a ladder can. Work out which wall the bed goes against before you choose, not after.

#4 · Buyers who will measure everything themselves

Harper & Bright Designs Twin Over Full Bunk Bed with Drawers and Ladder

Harper & Bright Designs

Solid pine with two drawers at a mid-range price, and not one safety number published anywhere on the listing.

Published specifications, as stated by the manufacturer
Guardrail height above mattressNot published by the manufacturer
Stated weight limit (per bunk)Not published by the manufacturer
Manufacturer minimum ageNot published by the manufacturer
Mattress thickness ceilingNot published by the manufacturer
Materials / constructionSolid pine wood frame and legs

What works

  • Solid pine rather than pine-and-MDF, at a price below the pine staircase bunks
  • Two under-bed drawers included rather than optional
  • Splits into two standalone beds later
  • Per-bunk mattress dimensions are published, which makes mattress shopping unambiguous

What doesn’t

  • Publishes no guardrail height, no weight limit, no mattress ceiling and no minimum age
  • A full-length guardrail is claimed but never measured on the listing
  • 66.54 in overall height is the second tallest here, which matters under a sloped ceiling
  • Nothing to compare against the other picks except price and material

The catch: This is a decent frame sold with no numbers on it. Every other bed in this roundup publishes at least one figure you can check before the box arrives; this one publishes none, so the first time you learn the guardrail clearance is with a tape measure on a bed you have already assembled. That is the whole reason it finishes last.

#5 · A younger child who should not be on a ladder at night

Max & Lily Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed With Stairs & Trundle

Max & Lily

Stairs with storage built into them, plus a third bed underneath — and a footprint that will not fit the small room this is usually bought for.

8.3/ 10
Max & Lily Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed With Stairs & Trundle
Published specifications, as stated by the manufacturer
Guardrail height above mattress14 in from the top of the slats
Stated weight limit (per bunk)400 lb per sleeping surface
Manufacturer minimum ageNot published by the manufacturer
Mattress thickness ceilingTrundle 5 in (6 in maximum); bunk ceiling not published for this model
Materials / constructionSolid knot-free pine, GREENGUARD Gold certified finish

What works

  • Grooved anti-slip stairs with a bannister, positionable on either side
  • Storage built into the staircase, which is the only storage here you do not pay for separately
  • Same 14 in rail and 400 lb per surface as the ladder version
  • The trundle still rolls away underneath, so the bed sleeps three in a two-child footprint

What doesn’t

  • 99.5 in long — nearly a foot and a half longer than the ladder version, all of it staircase
  • Max & Lily publish the trundle's mattress limit but not the bunks' on this configuration
  • The heaviest and slowest assembly here at around 360 lb of furniture
  • The most expensive pick on this page by a wide margin

The catch: The stairs and the trundle fight each other for floor. The staircase eats about nineteen inches at one end and the trundle needs clear floor along one side when it is open, so this bed wants a room with space on two of its four sides. In a genuinely small room, the ladder version plus a night light is the better buy.

#ad — how we earn

Questions parents actually ask

Do bunk beds with drawers need extra floor space?

Under-bed drawers do. Allow clear floor in front of them equal to roughly the depth of the drawer, or they will only ever open part of the way. Staircase drawers largely avoid this because they pull out into the space you already stand in to climb.

Are bunk beds with storage drawers sturdy?

The frames are fine; the drawers are the wear point. Most bunks with built-in drawers in this price bracket are pine mixed with MDF, and the drawer glides are the first component to loosen. Solid-pine alternatives cost more and offer less drawer volume. Re-tighten the frame fasteners every few months either way — see assembly and stability.

Can you add drawers to a bunk bed you already own?

Not as built-in drawers — those are part of the frame. What works is rolling under-bed storage boxes sized to the clearance under the bottom bunk, which is the approach we cover in toy storage that works. Measure the clearance under the frame before ordering; it is usually less than it looks.

Is a bunk bed with drawers or a trundle better?

Drawers if the room has nowhere to put clothes, a trundle if a third child sleeps over regularly. One frame here — the Harper & Bright twin-over-twin — publishes a trundle and three drawers together, and it states 400 lb for both bunks, which is the highest capacity among the drawer picks.

How much weight can a bunk bed with drawers hold?

It varies enormously and two of the five picks here publish nothing at all. Of those that do: 200 lb upper and 250 lb lower on the stairs-and-drawers model, and 400 lb per bunk on the trundle-and-drawers model. Never assume — our weight limits guide explains what the figure covers and what it does not.
