The best toddler pillows

A toddler pillow is 13 by 18 inches for a reason, and the height matters more than the print. These five were ranked on the loft, the fill and the certification they will actually state.

#ad — how we earn

How we chose

We are a small publisher, not a testing lab. We don’t buy, assemble or sleep in the beds we write about, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What we do instead is read the published specifications and check them against the rules that actually govern children’s beds in the United States: the federal standard for children’s bunk beds (16 CFR Part 1513), the ASTM F1427 requirements it incorporates, and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ guidance on upper-bunk age. Where a manufacturer publishes no number, we write “not published by the manufacturer” rather than guess — that absence is itself worth knowing. We read owner feedback at volume for the things specs can’t tell you, and we label it as signal, not proof.

We earn a commission when you buy through our links. It never changes an ordering. Our full editorial policy.

The short answer

Buy the KeaBabies My Little Dreamy Toddler Pillow. It is 13 by 18 inches at a low loft, its cover and pillowcase are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified organic cotton, the case is in the box, and the brand states an age range of 2 to 5 - which most of this category will not do.

If you want to spend as little as possible on finding out whether your child wants a pillow at all, buy the ZPECC Toddler Pillow: around 2.7 inches of loft, the flattest here, with two certifications on the cover and a case included.

One thing first, and it is not negotiable: no pillow in the sleep space during the first 12 months. Our pillow and blanket guide covers the safe-sleep guidance and what changes after the first birthday.

The first-year rule comes before every pick on this page

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ safe-sleep guidance is to keep pillows, loose blankets, quilts, bumpers and soft toys out of an infant’s sleep space entirely: a firm, flat surface with a fitted sheet and nothing else. That is settled guidance, not a preference, and it applies for the whole first year regardless of what any pillow listing says.

After the first birthday the hard restriction lifts, and in practice most families introduce a small flat pillow somewhere between 18 months and two years - usually at the move out of the crib, because the crib is the sleep space the guidance is written about. Every pillow on this page that states an age states two years or above. Treat that as the floor, not the target.

A toddler pillow is not a crib accessory

Several listings in this category show a pillow photographed in a crib. Ignore the photograph. If your child is still in a crib and still under a year old, nothing on this page belongs in there, and that includes the pillows we rank highest.

Why 13 by 18 inches, and why loft is the real spec

A toddler pillow is 13 by 18 inches almost without exception, and it is not an arbitrary size - it is roughly a third of a standard pillow, proportioned to a head and a set of shoulders that are much smaller than an adult’s. Four of the five pillows here are exactly 13 by 18. The fifth, the MLILY, is 12 by 20 and is a kid’s pillow rather than a toddler’s, which is why it ranks fourth here despite being the most technically accomplished product on the page.

Loft - the height of the pillow - is the spec that decides whether it works. A toddler’s head sits much closer to the mattress than an adult’s because their shoulders are narrower, so a pillow that would be “thin” for an adult is a wedge for a two-year-old. The spread here runs from about 2.7 inches (ZPECC) to about 3.5 inches (KeaBabies), with the adjustable foam picks letting you set it yourself.

Nobody publishes loft as a headline number, which is why we have taken it from the listed product dimensions and said “approximately.” Treat the figures as a comparison between these five rather than a precise measurement of the pillow that arrives - a fiber pillow in particular is taller after a wash and shorter after six months.

How we ranked these

Published loft, taken from the listed dimensions. Lower is better for a two-year-old. The adjustable pillows score well here because setting the loft beats guessing it.

Certification, and what it actually covers. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 means the textile has been tested for harmful substances. CertiPUR-US is the equivalent for polyurethane foam. Organic Content Standard 100 verifies organic fiber content. The distinction that matters: most of these certifications apply to the cover, not the filling, and the listings are usually careful about that even when the product name is not. Where that is true, we say so.

Stated age range. Three of the five publish one. Two publish nothing. On a product used by children between two and five - the exact window where a pillow goes from unnecessary to necessary - that silence is a real mark against a listing.

Washability, and what can be washed. Fiber pillows go in the machine whole. Foam pillows do not: you get a washable cover and a spot-clean insert. That is a bigger deal on a child’s pillow than on an adult’s, for reasons every parent can picture.

Value against what you get. A pillow with a case included is worth several dollars more than one without, because you need two cases from day one and you will wash one of them twice a week.

Fiber or foam: the trade is washability against shape

Fiber fill - the KeaBabies, ZPECC and Babebay picks - goes in the washing machine as a whole pillow and comes out the same shape, which is the single most useful property a child’s pillow can have. The cost is longevity: fiber compresses, and a fiber pillow washed every few weeks is noticeably flatter inside a year. At these prices that is a replaceable item rather than a problem.

Memory foam - the ATTABABY and MLILY picks - keeps its loft for years and cannot be washed. You wash the cover and the inner cover and you spot-clean the foam, and if something soaks through, you are in trouble. Foam also buys you the one thing fiber cannot: a genuinely adjustable height, which turns a two-year purchase into a four-year one.

Our pick order reflects a judgment rather than a score: for a child’s first pillow, washability wins. By about five or six, when accidents are rarer and the child is on a twin, adjustable foam is the better buy - which is also the point at which a 12-by-20 pillow stops being too big.

What the certifications mean, and where they stop

This is the detail most worth understanding before you spend money, because it is where the category is least honest by omission.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests a textile for harmful substances. On a toddler pillow it is almost always applied to the woven cover or the pillowcase. That is not a trivial certification - the cover is the layer against the child’s face all night - but it says nothing about what is inside.

CertiPUR-US applies to the foam, covering emissions, content and durability. A pillow carrying both CertiPUR-US on the foam and OEKO-TEX on the cover - as the ATTABABY does - is the only configuration here where both layers are independently tested.

Organic Content Standard 100 verifies that a fabric contains the organic fiber it claims. The ZPECC carries it alongside OEKO-TEX, both on the pillowcase.

And then there is the Babebay, which carries none of these, publishes no fill material and no fill weight, and spends four of its five listing bullets on the pattern. It is a perfectly serviceable cheap pillow and we have kept it on the page honestly - but on bedding a child breathes into for ten hours a night, we treat an absence of information as a finding rather than a neutral.

Sizing the pillowcase, and the sheets under it

A toddler pillowcase is about 14 by 19 inches - slightly larger than the pillow, which is what you want. A standard adult pillowcase on a 13-by-18 pillow leaves loose fabric a small child can get a hand and then a face into, so buy the right size rather than using a spare.

Three of the five picks here include a case. Two do not, and the replacement cases from the same brands are inexpensive. Buy two whichever route you take: one on the pillow, one in the cupboard, and a bedtime at 8pm rather than a wash cycle at 8pm.

While you are buying, our toddler sheets roundup covers the fitted sheet that goes under all of this, and the kids bedding sizes guide has every dimension in the category including pocket depths - the spec that decides whether a toddler fitted sheet stays on a crib mattress.

What we would not buy

An adult pillow folded in half. It is the most common improvisation and it is the worst option here: double the loft, loose fabric, and it will not stay folded.

A memory foam pillow for a two-year-old. Not because foam is unsafe - it is not - but because it cannot be washed, and the first two years of pillow ownership are the two years something is most likely to end up on it.

A weighted pillow or weighted blanket for a toddler. Weighted bedding is a separate product with its own considerations, and a child who cannot easily push it off should not be under one. Nothing on this page is weighted and that is deliberate.

Anything sold on the pattern alone. Every pillow in this category photographs well. The ones worth buying publish a size, a fill, a certification and an age - and the ones that publish none of those are competing on print.

And if the bed in question is a top bunk, the pillow is the easy part - the bedding is the problem. See bedding for a top bunk for the layer that keeps sliding over the guardrail.

Key takeaways

  • No pillow in the sleep space for the first 12 months. After the first birthday most families start somewhere between 18 months and two years.
  • 13 by 18 inches is the toddler size. A 12 by 20 kids pillow is a different product for an older child.
  • Loft is the spec that matters: around 2.7 to 3.5 inches on this page, and lower is better for a two-year-old.
  • Most certifications here cover the cover or the case, not the fill. Only the ATTABABY carries an independent mark on both layers.
  • Fiber washes whole and flattens over time; foam holds its shape and cannot be washed. For a first pillow, washability wins.
  • Buy a toddler-size pillowcase, not a spare adult one, and buy two of them.

The picks, in full

#1 · The first pillow, from two years up

KeaBabies My Little Dreamy Toddler Pillow with Pillowcase

KeaBabies

A 13 by 18 inch pillow at a genuinely low loft, with an OEKO-TEX certified organic cotton cover and a case in the box.

8.9/ 10
KeaBabies My Little Dreamy Toddler Pillow with Pillowcase
Published specifications, as stated by the manufacturer
Guardrail height above mattressNot applicable
Stated weight limit (per bunk)Not applicable
Manufacturer minimum ageAges 2-5 per the manufacturer
Mattress thickness ceilingNot applicable
Materials / constructionOEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified organic cotton cover and pillowcase, fiber fill; 13 x 18 in, approx 3.5 in loft

What works

  • States an age range (2-5), which is the single most useful number on a toddler pillow listing
  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified cover - tested for harmful substances, on the one textile a child breathes into
  • Pillowcase included, so the cover you wash twice a week is not an extra purchase
  • Pillow and case are both machine washable and dryable

What doesn’t

  • No fill weight or fill density published, so the firmness is unknown until it arrives
  • Arrives vacuum-sealed and flat; it needs a wash and tumble dry before it looks like the photograph
  • Fiber fill flattens with washing in a way foam does not
  • The printed case patterns are not all offered at the same price

The catch: The loft is right for a two-year-old and it will be too soft for a seven-year-old. This is a two-to-three-year pillow, which is fine at this price but worth knowing before you buy two.

#2 · Trying a pillow for the first time

ZPECC Toddler Pillow with Organic Cotton Pillowcase

ZPECC

Stated weight limit (per bunk)Not applicable
Manufacturer minimum ageIntended for age 2 and up per the manufacturer
Mattress thickness ceilingNot applicable
Materials / constructionOrganic Content Standard 100 and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified organic cotton pillowcase, microfiber fill; pillow 13 x 18 in at approx 2.7 in loft, case 14 x 19 in

What works

  • 2.7 in is the lowest loft on this page, which is what a two-year-old's neck actually wants
  • Two certifications on the cover: Organic Content Standard 100 and OEKO-TEX Standard 100
  • Publishes the pillowcase size as well as the pillow size, so you know the case is not tight
  • Cheapest pick here by a wide margin, with the case included

What doesn’t

  • Microfiber fill, not down or foam - it will compress and need replacing sooner
  • Certifications apply to the pillowcase fabric; the fill carries no stated certification
  • Needs washing and drying out of the bag to regain loft
  • No fill weight published

The catch: The certifications are on the case, not the filling, and the listing is careful about that distinction even where the headline is not. You are buying a certified organic cotton cover over uncertified microfiber - still the right trade at this price, as long as you know it is the trade.

#3 · A child who keeps outgrowing a flat pillow

ATTABABY Adjustable Memory Foam Toddler Pillow

ATTABABY

Two removable foam inserts, so one pillow covers the three years in which a child's shoulders change everything.

ATTABABY Adjustable Memory Foam Toddler Pillow

Manufacturer minimum ageAge 2 and above per the manufacturer
Mattress thickness ceilingNot applicable
Materials / constructionCertiPUR-US certified ventilated gel-infused memory foam inserts, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified cover, envelope-closure case; 13 x 18 in

What works

  • Two inserts of different thicknesses, so you set the loft and raise it as the child grows
  • Carries both CertiPUR-US (the foam) and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (the cover) - the strongest certification pairing here
  • Memory foam does not clump or flatten the way fiber fill does
  • Envelope-closure case with no zipper and no metal parts

What doesn’t

  • Foam inserts are spot-clean; only the cover goes in the machine
  • Most expensive 13 by 18 pillow on this page
  • Gel-infused foam has a faint smell for the first few nights
  • No insert thickness published in inches, so 'two heights' is as specific as it gets

The catch: The foam cannot be washed. On an adult pillow that is a detail; on a child's pillow, where the realistic failure mode is a stomach bug at 2 a.m., it means you are relying entirely on the case and the inner covers doing their job.

Stated weight limit (per bunk)Not applicable

Mattress thickness ceilingNot applicable
Materials / constructionCertiPUR-US certified memory foam in three removable layers, modal cover, machine washable; 12 x 20 in

What works

  • Three separate layers, so the loft goes up in two steps rather than one
  • Contoured top layer gives real neck support, which a flat toddler pillow cannot
  • CertiPUR-US certified foam, with the listing stating compliance with children's product safety standards
  • Modal cover is removable and machine washable in cold water

What doesn’t

  • 12 by 20 in is bigger than a toddler pillow - wrong for a child under about six
  • No age range published at all, which is the number this category most needs
  • Foam layers cannot be washed, only the cover
  • The most expensive pick on this page

The catch: This is a kid's pillow, not a toddler's. At 12 by 20 inches with a contoured top layer it is too much pillow for a two-year-old, and putting it in a toddler bed gets you a child sleeping with their head propped at an angle.

What works

  • Correct 13 by 18 in toddler size, with the case included
  • Pillow and case are both machine washable
  • Cheap enough to keep a spare at a grandparent's house
  • Unisex printed cases that match most toddler bedding

What doesn’t

  • No certification of any kind published - no OEKO-TEX, no organic claim, nothing
  • Fill material and fill weight are not stated anywhere on the listing
  • No age range published
  • Four of the five listing bullets are about the pattern rather than the product

The catch: It is ranked last here for one reason: the listing is almost entirely about the print. Everything we rank on - fill, loft, certification, age - is simply absent, and on bedding a child breathes into all night we treat that silence as the finding rather than as a neutral.

Questions parents actually ask

When can a toddler start using a pillow?

Not during the first 12 months - the AAP’s safe-sleep guidance keeps pillows, loose blankets and soft toys out of an infant’s sleep space entirely. After the first birthday the hard restriction lifts, and most families introduce a small flat pillow between 18 months and two years, usually at the move out of the crib. Every pillow on this page that states an age says two and above.

What size is a toddler pillow?

13 by 18 inches, which is roughly a third of a standard adult pillow. A toddler pillowcase is normally about 14 by 19 inches so it fits without being tight. Pillows sold as “kids” rather than “toddler” are often 12 by 20 or larger and are intended for school-age children.

How thick should a toddler pillow be?

Thin. A toddler’s shoulders are narrow, so their head sits much closer to the mattress than an adult’s and a thick pillow pushes the neck forward. The pillows here run from about 2.7 to 3.5 inches of loft, and the adjustable foam ones let you start at the lowest setting and raise it as the child grows.

Are memory foam pillows safe for toddlers?

Foam pillows for children are standard and widely sold; the mark worth looking for is CertiPUR-US, which covers the foam’s emissions and content. The practical argument against foam for a young toddler is not safety, it is cleaning - the foam cannot be machine washed, so you are relying on the cover.

What does OEKO-TEX Standard 100 actually certify on a pillow?

That the textile has been tested for harmful substances. On toddler pillows it is almost always applied to the cover or the pillowcase rather than the filling, so a pillow can carry the mark on a certified cotton cover over uncertified microfiber fill. That is still worth having - the cover is the layer against the child’s face - but it is not a certification of the whole pillow.

How often should you wash a toddler pillow?

Wash the case weekly or more, and the pillow itself every month or two if it is machine washable. Fiber pillows are designed for this and come out of the wash the same shape; foam pillows cannot be washed at all, which is a point in favor of fiber for a child under about five.

Can a toddler pillow go in a travel bed?

Yes, and it is one of the better reasons to own a 13-by-18 pillow - it packs into a carry-on and gives a child something familiar in an unfamiliar room. Several listings in the category are explicitly sold as travel pillows for that reason.
